The Physiological Society was founded in 1876 and its members are made up of over 3,000 scientists from around the world. The members of the Physiological Society have made significant contributions to knowledge of biological systems and the Society works to promote physiology among both the wider scientific community and the general public. The Physiological Society selected Moore-Wilson to define and implement their new digital strategy. The Society wanted a new website with an updated design that was easy to navigate. It was important that the website provided users with a personalised experience and allowed members of the society to effectively collaborate and interact with each other.
We conducted initial interviews and focus group sessions to help us identify the most logical information architecture and useful functionality for the site. It was important to think of the different types of visitors and develop tailored user journeys and content relevant to each of these groups. We integrated the site with the iMIS CRM system, which authenticates users when logging in and enables members to update a range of personal details within the site. This helps to create a personalised experience for users who are logged in, as content is listed based on their preferences, and events are displayed based on their proximity to the user.
We have continued to refine and update the site, which was launched at the end of 2011. One of the recent key development updates is a system to allow real time collaborative editing for members. This is a useful tool that encourages increased and ongoing interaction between members working on shared subjects of interest.
Following the successful launch of the main website, the Physiological Society asked Moore-Wilson to develop their main educational site. The Understanding Life website provides support for the teaching and learning of physiology. We built the Understanding Life site on the same CMS platform as the main site which means resources and content can be shared between the sites – incorporating social networking tools was an important component of this project’s success.
