Transforming access to sexual health services through clarity, speed and accessibility
Devon Sexual Health required a new WordPress website to act as the primary source of information for sexual health services across Devon and Torbay. The site needed to support a wide audience, with a particular focus on 16–25 year olds, while remaining accessible and easy to use for all users.
A key challenge was ensuring the website catered to users with lower than average reading ability, while also meeting strict NHS accessibility standards. The existing site was difficult to navigate, making it hard for users to find relevant information quickly, particularly when searching for help with specific symptoms or concerns.
The team at Moore-Wilson led a detailed scoping phase, including workshops with stakeholders from youth and sexual health organisations across the county. This helped define a clear set of priorities, with a strong emphasis on mobile-first design, simplified navigation, and fast access to key content.
The team at Moore-Wilson began by completely rethinking the site structure to prioritise usability and speed of access. Given the nature of the audience and subject matter, it was critical that users could quickly find the information they needed without friction. This led to a streamlined architecture and multiple navigation pathways to key content.
From a design perspective, Moore-Wilson focused on simplicity and clarity. Without the use of photography or illustrations, we developed a strong visual identity through colour and clear call-to-action tiles. These tiles were used to surface the most common queries and symptoms, helping users immediately navigate to relevant content.
The homepage was designed as a central hub, incorporating a clear menu structure, a prominent search function, and quick-access links. Additional features such as the “Find a Service” tool allow users to locate nearby services via list or map view, while a dedicated professionals section provides access to resources, training, and events.
Helping users find answers quickly, confidently and without friction.
"The new website delivers a significantly improved user experience, making it far easier for users to access the information they need quickly and confidently. The mobile-first approach ensures the site performs effectively for its core audience, while remaining fully accessible to all users.
By simplifying navigation and introducing multiple access points to key content, Moore-Wilson has reduced friction for users, particularly those searching for specific symptoms or advice. Features such as the homepage search, call-to-action tiles, and service finder have made the journey more intuitive and user-led.
The result is a clear, accessible and highly usable platform that supports both public users and professionals, while meeting NHS standards and providing a strong foundation for future content growth.
