Google Chrome - A Web Development Perspective

Google Chrome – The Anniversary gift for the web.

The traditional gifts given on a 10th Anniversary are usual made of tin or aluminium. Google, well being Google, have broken the rules again and given the World Wide Web a tenth anniversary gift fashioned out of Chrome.

Chrome is Google’s first internet browser. The beta version of Google Chrome is now available to download. Here at Moore Wilson we have given Chrome the once over to assess the implications for web development.

Web Development  - Google Chrome

Have you spent thousand of hours developing a site and are worried that it won’t work in Chrome? You can sit back and relax. Chrome isn’t going to wreak havoc with your code.

Why are we so confident?

See Chrome is constructed out of a piece of software called web kit. Web kit has been used to create the Safari browser, the web applications on the  iPhone, Adobe Air and Android. This is good news for web developers. If you have tested your current designs and projects in Safari (as we always do at Moore Wilson) then it will work fine in Chrome. We have road tested the websites we have built and they are all fine. They load even quicker in Chrome than we thought that they would. It is the Usain Bolt of browsers, leaving the competitors gasping for air, lagging behind.

The speed of Chrome, down to the ultra-fast V8 JavaScript engine, will have web development implications further down the line. The super fast processing, loading and rendering of web pages in Chrome will create a massive temptation to load even more java script into designs. The result will surely be more dynamic content, better usability and user interaction. Chrome is built for web 2.0. It could lead to an explosion in high end design.

Google Chrome is open source so it should develop at a pace. It could be an entirely different beast in a few months time. A swarm of plug-ins and add-ons should soon be upon us, creating a more bespoke feel for the Chrome user.  Chrome will undoubtedly have repercussions in web development. Everything that Google does tends to push the  internet envelope that little bit further.  Welcome to the future of web browsers.
